7 Questions to Ask Family Lawyers before You Hire Them

March 29, 2012
Written by Christopher Migliaccio

When you’re in need of family law group services you may not know where to start in the process of finding the right representation for your child custody case in Dallas. Though it may seem to be a daunting task, getting the right team of Texas family lawyers can be boiled down to simply asking the right questions about family and children laws.  Here are questions for Family Lawyers to ask.

Most lawyers who handle child custody in Dallas and other Texas cities will be willing to sit down and have an initial, exploratory meeting with you – this is generally referred to as an “initial consultation” and it gives you the opportunity to explain your case to an attorney and ask questions about the legal process, children laws, visitation rights, etc.

It also gives the attorney the chance to learn about your legal predicament and determine how he or she could best help you.

Make the Most of Your Texas Family Lawyers Meeting with 7 Questions

These meetings are usually not very long, so it’s important that you prepare yourself to make the most of your time. This way, after you leave, you can make an informed decision as to whether or not you’re interested in retaining the services form the family law group.

In order to maximize your time in an attorney consultation, we recommend asking the following 7 questions to any lawyer with whom you discuss your case:

• What’s your practice history and are you a member of any bar associations? Having a thorough understanding of your lawyer’s background isn’t only useful, but vital for your consideration. • How much of your business comes from child custody and family law cases? If a good portion or the majority of an attorney’s business comes from family law, then you know that you can expect the attorney will be familiar and comfortable with all of the processes necessary to navigate you from front to finish. • How will my case be handled – will you specifically be handling my case, or will I be put in touch with a case manager? Some firms use paralegals and case managers in their day-to-day operations and there’s nothing wrong with that business practice. It can facilitate and streamline a large volume of cases that would otherwise be unmanageable for attorneys, given the rest of their duties. Some smaller firms, however, put you in direct contact with the lawyer. This issue is entirely a matter of preference, but you should know what to expect before the process begins. • What kind of resolution is reasonable to expect for my case? Even before an attorney takes your case, he or she should have an advance understanding of how your case will unfold, given the facts. • How much do you charge for your services, and is there a retainer fee or other expenses I will be charged? Different firms and attorneys handle billing practices differently, and some will be flexible with payment methods, depending on your needs. • How frequently will you provide progress reports on the status of my case, and what can I expect to be included in those reports? You don’t ever want to be in a situation where you feel like you’re in the dark on the status of your case. • What potential problems do you see with my case? Knowing the possibility of complication in advance can prepare you if and when they happen – and your attorney should be prepared for those potential pitfalls, too.

You will need the services of a family attorney who applies both a comprehensive understanding of family and children laws and a compassionate drive to help families in Texas. Really, everyone would just like to reach conclusions that are in the best interests of the children involved.
