When you’re going through a divorce, your children’s emotional wellbeing will naturally be one of your primary concerns. Granted, divorce is difficult on everyone involved, it is particularly difficult on the children.  However, by being a proactive parent, staying emotionally available to your children, and helping them understand the changing family dynamics, you can help them better adjust to their new lives.

Helping Children Cope: Using Children’s Books about Divorce

Children’s books are a great resource for families going through a divorce. It’s a safe, subtle way to explain key issues to children and a good way to open the doors of communication.

Here are five books that parents may find helpful:

  • Two Homes – For the young child aged two to four, this book by Claire Masurel can help them focus on what is gained, rather than lost, in a divorce.
  • It’s Not the End of the World – This Judy Blume book for nine- to 12-year-olds helps kids understand that despite best efforts, sometimes people are unable to live together.
  • Dinosaurs Divorce (A Guide for Changing Families) – This picture book by Marc Brown is suitable for four- to eight-year-olds. It emphasizes that the child is not at fault, and that there are lots of other people going through similar situations.
  • Divorce Is Not the End of the World: Zoe’s and Evan’s Coping Guide for Kids – Writers Zoe and Evan Stern have geared this book toward kids ages eight and up. It shows them that they can grow stronger after the divorce, and can learn to deal with life events in positive manner.
  • I Don’t Want to Talk about It – This book by Jeanie Franz Ransom and Kathryn Kunz Finney can help four to eight-year-olds understand that no matter how much parents may disagree with each other, the child will always be loved very much.
