Camp Lejeune Lawsuit Overview

Camp Lejeune is a military training facility and base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. In 1982, the Marine Corps found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the base’s drinking water. Many VOCs are toxic chemicals. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) calculates that this water pollution started in the 1950s.

As many as one million people have been exposed to Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water. It has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, adverse health conditions, and birth injuries.

President Biden recently signed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022. This act allows individuals to file civil lawsuits against the U.S. government for harmful water exposure. Many individuals are filing lawsuits against the government to seek compensation for damages. Examples of damages include medical expenses, lost wages, and loss of future earning potential.

Why Is It Important to Hire an Attorney for a Camp Lejeune Lawsuit?

You may have a valid Camp Lejeune claim to recover compensation for damages. However, obtaining compensation is not as easy as filing some paperwork.

For example, you need to verify that you were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. You must also prove that Camp Lejeune’s water likely caused your illness. Additionally, there are important deadlines that you cannot miss when filing your claim. Even one mistake on your claim can hurt your chances of recovery.

An experienced mass tort attorney can help you in many ways, including, but not limited to:

  • Answering your legal questions
  • Determining whether you have a qualified Camp Lejeune claim to recover compensation
  • Verifying you suffered at least 30 days of toxic water exposure at Camp Lejeune
  • Proving Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water caused or likely caused your health condition
  • Organizing and filing your Camp Lejeune claim
  • Negotiating or litigating on your behalf to fight for the compensation you deserve
