The process of going through a divorce is difficult enough without considering the effects it will have on the children. Adding to this, many are concerned about their right and responsibility as a parent to provide financially for the children. In Texas, child support is determined on a case-by-case basis. If you are in need of child support or you are looking to receive it, you may need the help of a Texas child custody lawyer. There may be options available that you are not aware of.

Texas Child Support: Rights of a Parent

When you are attempting to provide or obtain support for your children in Texas, the Office of the Attorney General can be of help. Through the Child Support Division, you will have access to a wide range of support services at no cost.

As a parent you have certain rights, such as the right to privacy. In some circumstances the divorce is not amicable and you may be concerned about your spouse locating you. The personal information you share, such as your address, will not be disclosed

As a parent you also have a right to inquire about your case at any time. You may also submit a written complaint at any time.

You can also expect that you will receive professional customer service on a timely basis. At the same time, as a parent you should also know that you have many responsibilities, too.

If you have an order to appear in court, you must do so. Failure to show up for court could reflect negatively on your case.

If you are required to complete any documents, it is important that you do so. Fill them out in a timely manner with the correct information. Failure to do this could also affect your case.

If you have been ordered to pay child support, it is your responsibility to follow through. Even if you do not agree with the decision or the amount, you cannot choose to ignore it. You can always try to have the order changed by going through the proper channels in the court, but there are no guarantees.

Finally, if your phone number or address changes, it is your responsibility to inform the Office of the Attorney General. It is your responsibly to make sure all information is up-to-date.

The Office of the Attorney General can also help in other ways, such as establishing paternity, locating a parent who is absent, enforcing child support orders, and other issues pertaining to payments. However, even then you may find yourself in need of additional help.
