Tobey Maguire’s ex-wife Jennifer Meyer seemingly defended him after he was spotted with 20-year-old actress Lily Chee at Michael Rubin’s annual Independence Day party.
On July 4, the Spider-Man actor, 49, was photographed with his arm around the model-actress at the star-studded White Party in the Hamptons, New York.
Some criticized Maguire after the photos were released due to the age gap between him and Chee. “Spiderman was released a year BEFORE she was born this is crazy,” read a post on social media that gathered over 13K likes.
Meyer, who was married to Maguire for nine years before they separated in 2016 and she filed for divorce in 2020, allegedly came to his defense during two heated Instagram exchanges.

Responding to a comment that accused Maguire of “banging someone 3 years older than your daughter,” Meyer claimed that he was “kindly helping” Chee to her car, according to screenshots on Reddit.
The fashion designer, 47, said that Maguire was simply “being a good guy.”
“And now he has [been] blasted online for dating someone he is not. But thank you for your rude comment. I hope it made you feel better today. Wishing you love and light,” she continued.

Meyer allegedly later responded to the same person: “I am disengaging after this… But don’t believe everything you read (I’m sure you were taught that somewhere) Tobey is as good of a guy as it gets.”
PEOPLE reached out to representatives for Meyer, but did not immediately hear back. Neither Maguire nor Chee have addressed the recent photos.
Meyer and Maguire share two children, son Otis, 15, and daughter Ruby, 17.
The pair tied the knot in 2007 in Kona, Hawaii. Meyer filed for divorce from Maguire in October 2020, several years after they separated.
In October 2016, a source told PEOPLE that the couple had “been living separate lives for a while.”
“They have completely different interests and haven’t seemed to be connecting,” the insider said at the time. “He’s extremely private and prefers to stay home, and she’s very social and has tons of girlfriends.”
“They haven’t been happy together for a long time, but they are great parents and they love their children,” the source continued.

On Saturday, July 6, Chee shared a set of images from the event on Instagram. The first photo shows her sitting in a chair at the party in her white dress with a corset detail on the side, followed by a beachy snap of her and a friend. She poses with her group of friends in the other images – one of which is taken under a neon pink light.
