5 Tech Tips for Staying In Touch With Your Kids After Divorce

If your child custody agreement allows for your ex-spouse to retain primary custody of your children and move miles away from the Texas home you once shared you may risk losing contact with them over time.

Fortunately, with the power of the Internet communication across distance is easier and more efficient than ever, allowing you to retain your parental rights to visitation even if you can’t be there in person.

When an ex-spouse moves your children a distance that makes regular visitation a problem you can rely on these 5 technology solutions to help keep yourself in your child’s life.

  • Social media – today’s generation of teens were practically born with a Facebook profile and even older adults are getting into the social scene. If your child is old enough to have an account make sure you do to – it’s a great way to see what they’re up to and share information in a casual setting.
  • Skype – video chat is essential to keeping that personal bond between parent and child. This is especially true for very young children who rely on visual and audio cues to interact with their parents. Regular Skype calls can help keep you in your child’s sight and ears with just a simple web cam and microphone.
  • Blogs – for when you CAN visit your child in person, make a journal-style blog with photos to create memories of the special times you spend together.
  • Cell phones – it may be common sense that phone calls are the best way to keep in touch, but you can go beyond just voice calls with simple text or picture messages reminding your child you’re thinking of them.
  • Phone apps – aside from using your smartphone to call or Skype with your child there are many games you can play with them through phones that can keep you in touch in a fun way.

Remember to keep in mind your child’s age when using technology to keep in touch. While appropriate for older children, babies, toddlers and pre-teens may not be able or allowed to use the Internet. In these cases, you’ll need to work with their custodial parent to set up phone calls or video chat sessions to see and hear your little ones.

As a parent you have rights to interacting with your child that are defined by your child custody agreement and parenting plan. If you are facing challenges with the terms of your child custody agreement after a divorce you should exercise your right to a Dallas family lawyer attorney’s help.

A Dallas Family Lawyer can protect Your Parental Rights

Even after a divorce you should have certain rights pertaining to interacting with your child even if you are not the main custodial parent. Unfortunately, when a parent moves a child out of town it can make visitation difficult. If you feel like your rights to contact with your children are in jeopardy it’s time to speak to a professional.
