The Dangers of Do-It-Yourself Divorce Kits

Post by Christopher Migliaccio Leave a Comment

There are many options to seeking a divorce in Texas and one of the newer concepts is the “do-it-yourself divorce kit” that can be purchased for a few hundred dollars. What this kit contains is basically the legal forms necessary for a simple divorce; some even cater to couples with children in need of child custody agreements as well.

If this all sounds simple be careful, because that’s what the kit creators want you to think. The reality is if you want to truly protect your assets and the best interests of your family you need to have professional legal help – not a binder full of paperwork.

While divorce kits usually contain a simplified version of the Texas divorce laws that anyone can read it doesn’t mean that they will explain all of the different issues that can arise during a divorce case. Especially in cases where child custody, alimony, and substantial marital assets are at stake, a piece of paper won’t be able to advise you when you’re being taken advantage of during a divorce settlement.

The biggest issue with using a divorce kit is that there’s no guarantee or backup resource to double check that you’re completing all of the necessary steps for a fair settlement of your divorce case. Even if everything on your documentation looks correct and the court grants your divorce it doesn’t mean you got a fair deal in your final settlement.

Even though the saying goes “if you want something done right you have to do it yourself” this is typically NOT the case with divorce. You’ll have peace of mind and better recourse when you work with a Texas divorce attorney for your settlement rather than leaving things up to chance with a divorce kit.

Don’t Leave things to Chance – Get Professional Divorce Help

Even if a divorce kit claims it was developed by professional family law attorneys that doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to protect all of your rights and assets. A divorce gone wrong could prevent you from making the fresh start you need after ending a troubled marriage. You owe it to yourself and your family to take every opportunity to protect your future by seeking professional help from a divorce attorney.

The attorneys at Warren & Migliaccio have years of experience, and we’ll use that training to provide you peace of mind for the future, whatever the circumstances for your divorce or family law situation. From the initial consultation until the day your divorce is finalized, our Texas family lawyer team at Warren & Migliaccio is here to advocate on behalf of you and your children.
