6 Tips for Handling Children Switching Residencies

Post by Christopher Migliaccio Leave a Comment

Numerous types of custody issues for children may sprout from separation and divorce. For example, a child may develop a desire to live with the non-custodial parent, an issue neither parent may know how to handle appropriately.

If possible, speaking with your ex, sharing co-parenting tips, and trying to find practical, reasonable solutions to your child’s needs is the best route to take. If you need assistance working through some of the issues you’re facing, you may benefit from contacting a local family counseling center. For issues regarding custody, speak with an attorney.

Dealing with a Child that Wants to Switch Residencies

The reasons why a child may want to switch residencies can be quite varied.  Licensed clinical social worker Lisa Schab explains in a 2003 article appearing on ChicagoParent.com that “unless there are extreme circumstances underlying a child’s threat to live with his other parent, everyone should be reminded of the custody rules that have been set up in his best interest.”

Here are a few co-parenting tips for parents dealing with a child that wants to relocate to the non-custodial parent’s home:

  • Speak one-on-one with your child and attempt to ascertain the underlying reasons he or she wants to move.
  • Teach your child about his or her rights, and how Texas laws apply to your situation.
  • Try to work amicably with your ex-spouse to arrive at solutions that are in the best interests of your child.
  • Abide by any court orders in place and contact authorities if you feel your child is in any danger.
  • Offer reassurance and emotional support for your child during this difficult transition, reiterating unconditional love.
  • Consider seeking professional assistance from a family psychologist and/or a Texas child custody attorney, especially if you suspect your child may run away to the non-custodial parent.
